Snowy 2.0 (NSW)

Snowy2 0

Overview

Horizon United Group has played a key role in the Snowy 2.0 project, contributing significantly to its development through a series of civil and maintenance works projects between 2020 and 2022. Their expertise and experience have been integral to the progress of this large-scale pumped hydro initiative.

Scope of works

Snowy 2.0 will enhance Snowy Hydro’s pumped hydro capabilities by connecting the two existing Snowy Scheme dams, Tantangara and Talbingo, via underground tunnels and an underground power station with pumping functions. The project will increase the Snowy Mountains’ generation capacity by up to 2,200 MW and, at full capacity, provide approximately 350,000 MWh of energy storage, positioning it as one of the largest pumped hydro  systems in the world.

Horizon United Group was responsible for critical civil works in support of the pumped hydro-electric power station and its associated infrastructure, spanning the Talbingo and Tantangara Reservoirs in Kosciuszko National Park, New South Wales. Their work included the construction of key elements such as tunnels and other supporting infrastructure, all contributing to the seam-less integration of this major energy project.

Their involvement helped lay the foundation for the connection of the two reservoirs via 27 kilometres of power waterway tunnels, with the power station to be located 800 metres under ground, ensuring the project’s success and long-term impact on energy storage and generation
