Reconciliation Week
Happy National Reconciliation Week Australia.
Maliyan Horizon recently organised for the NSW Bushfire Recovery Project, Tumbarumba to receive a Welcome to Country by Wiradjuri Elder, Uncle Pat Connelly. Both ourselves and our joint venture partner, BMD, were honoured to be witness to the event, which included both a welcome and a cleansing ceremony at one of BMD’s sites in Courabyra.
The owners of the property, Mark and Sharon, along with their children and grandchildren greatly appreciated the cleansing ceremony as they plan to re-build their lives on a much loved property. We also had the opportunity to show BMD Northern Region Manager Tim McMahon how the project was tracking, along with the management team from Laing O'Rourke and NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro.
This week Maliyan Horizon Operations Manager Bull Smith and Supervisor Uncle Richo Penrith presented the National Reconciliation Week 2020 Toolbox Talk. Uncle Richo delivered an inspiring presentation, talking about his Uncle Kevin Coombs, a 5 time Paralympian and Captain of the 1984 Paralympics basketball team. The message he brought to the group was to view the positives from our shared history. Uncle Richo pointed out that the 1967 Referendum saw a Yes vote of just over 90% and that Toolboxes Talks, such as those delivered by BMD, allow these messages to be shared with an audience that may not normally get to think about issues such as this in a positive light.
